SONORA CARRUSELES (Colombia)

On stage: 12 + 2 crew

Touring period: Summer 2013

Based: Colombia

Booking territory: Europe

One of the best contemporary salsa music that exists today. Formed in Medellin, the group is well known throughout salsa dance circles for their energetic and fun salsa dance songs like "Micaela" "Al son de los cuervos", "Cachondea" and "La Comay". With nine albums to its credit and more than twelve years of existence, Colombia's Sonora Carruseles has perfected a trademark sound that is cherished by salsa lovers all over the world. The orchestra burst into the local tropical scene performing Afro-Caribbean rhythms, including a traditional style known as salsa brava, originated in the 1960s. Formed in 1995 by composer/producer Diego Galé and Mario Rincón, the group became a boogaloo and original salsa revival, taking over Latin America, the USA and Europe."

There's some seriously powerful stuff to be found in their music: spidery piano lines, tight polyrythms, explosive brass riffs, staccato cowbell patterns and impossibly nasal choruses that are just hard to resist. Sonora Carruseles plays a moving tribute to the spirit of old hard-core salsa while at the same time revamping this nearly forgotten classical style.

LA 33 (Colombia)

On stage: 12 + 3 crew

Touring period: Summer 2012

Based: Colombia

Booking territory: Switzerland

Urban Salsa from the streets of Bogota! They have the freshness that only a young hard salsa band can have. La-33, was founded in 2002 by the two brothers Sergio and Santiago Mejia. The album debut titled "La-33", released in 2004 as an independent production, won immediate success for its arrangements, lyrics, clean recording and great sound, and specially for their worldwide Latin dance hit - "La Pantera Mambo", a mambo version of "The Pink Panther". LA-33 plays a hard-swinging salsa & Latin Jazz for an irresistible and infectious urban salsa concert! This is clearly a band that generates excitement and does it with a sense of humor. There is no stuffiness here, and the music is totally refreshing. Every La 33 musician comes from a different musical background: rock, funk, ska, folk, classical music, fusion and jazz. Perhaps it's this diversity that is one of the secrets of this ensemble's success. They're known as the rockers of salsa because they combine the true swing and sabor of the classic salsa orchestra with true rock'n'roll attitude."

I loved this storming assault of Latin brass when we reviewed the album 'gozalo', but having seen them live I'm convinced that is one of the best party bands on the planet"

EDWIN BONILLA (Puerto Rico)

On stage: 10 + 2 crew

Touring period: Summer 2013

Based: Miami

Booking territory: Europe

Edwin Bonilla, one of the best percussionists in the world, has collaborated with artists the caliber of Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin, Madonna, Juan Luis Guerra, Marc Anthony, Cachao, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Celia Cruz and many more. This multi-talented Puerto Rican is an accomplished musician, songwriter and producer, but more importantly he has been captivating “salseros” all over the world with the unmistakable power of his music. Edwin's newest production “Homenaje a los rumberos” - 2012 Grammy Nomination as Best Tropical Latin Album - pays tribute to the New York salsa explosion of the '70s with vibrant new versions of dance-floor scorchers by the likes of Rubén Blades and Tite Curet Alonso. His previous recordings, "Edwin y su son", "Soy la candela" and "Pa’la calle" received outstanding reviews and critical acclaim from renowned music critics like Descarga.com, All About Jazz, Allmusic.com, AOL Radio and The Miami Herald. Edwin continues his line of burning hot salsa albums with his fourth solo production. ‘HOMENAJE A LOS RUMBEROS’ pays tribute to the old school salsa masters, with original songs and classics like ‘Canto Abacua’ by Rubén Blades & ‘Ella Está En Otra Rumba’ by Tite Curet Alonso. Powerful horns, strong percussion riffs, crisp and wide vocal arrangements, deep live “descargas” are what define Edwin’s sound. Edwin blends rich Afro-percussion with blasting pure dance tracks for the real salsa dancers. Edwin takes us for a ride through many styles, blending rich Afro-Percussion interludes with blasting pure dance tracks, a true pleasure for the real salsa dancers. Featuring artists like: Giovanni Hidalgo, Cheito Quiñones, Jesus “El Niño” Perez and Ricardo Gaitán.

"..the most important factor is the musical depth and superb performances throughout. All solos in this recording are killers. Bonilla is a master at laying back, so much so that it seems as though he will not be able to jump ahead, only to then hit hard and fast with unparalleled skill and speed, heard to great effect during his timbale and conga solos and his bongo turns".

Featuring four Cubans, a Sicilian, a Brazilian and a Swiss they sing in Spanish, Portuguese and Italian (and can handle Arabic and English as well). Lariba's music covers a variety of ‘urban latin’ styles, mixing in elements of reggaeton, cumbia, hip-hop, son, mozambique, samba-reggae, baiao, mariachi, salsa, jazz, batá, santería, samba, bomba . . Whilst this might sound like a recipe for a dodgy international fondue. These guys are good, VERY good! Definitely one of the best surprises of the year! Recommended. Pass the fondue fork, please, someone.

PICASON (Switzerland, Cuba)

On stage: 15 + 1 crew

Touring period: available all the year

Based: Switzerland, Denmark

Booking territory: Switzerland

A sure bet for first-class salsa! Picason is one of the few well-known but non-cuban bands to play Cubas most modern style „Timba“; this means a hot groovy Salsa with a funkyfied hornsection and an extra dose of afro-cuban rhythm. With more than 400 concerts in Europe and Latin America, and tours in Cuba, Picason has such a rhythmic and musical confidence that is able to play the arrangements of Cuban’s best musicians like the flutist Orlando “Maraca” Valle and the saxofonist Tony Martínez – and this means a lot.

LOS GUASONEROS (Cuba)

On stage: 7 + 1 crew

Touring period: June-Sept 2012

Based: Cuba

Booking territory: Switzerland

This seven full-blood musicians play a strong and intoxicating Changüi, the home rythmus of Guantánamo, cuban province where they come. Los Guasoneros play their own compositions as well as the more familiar Cuban rhythms like Son, Salsa and Bolero. Specially are the instruments used by them for the rhythm section, such as the "sound box" and the Changui-Dance, in which it is used mainly the upper body, from the hip to the head. This offers a rather unusual but very attractive dance. Look forward to a vibrant, warm evening with one of the best Cuban bands. Keeping still is not possible!
